My professional life has allowed me to assist companies and organizations develop strategies and solutions to complex challenges in a continuously evolving environment. My civic life has revolved around service to community. My personal life is predicated on dedication to family and service to others.
Professional
I am currently an executive of a multimillion-dollar consulting firm, Applied Revenue Analytics. Prior to founding my own firm, I was a partner of Ernst & Young, a $14 billion, and Big Six global consulting firm. My career has been built around my ability to assess challenges and then determine optimum solutions.
I consult with executives, boards of directors, and business leaders in the health care industry throughout the United States. During my thirty-two year career, I have consulted to clients in virtually every U.S. state and five countries, and have served as the interim CIO of prestigious academic medical centers New England Medical Center-Tufts University (NEMC) in Boston and Johns Hopkins Health System in Baltimore. I speak frequently at conferences and seminars around the country, and on a few occasions internationally. My area of expertise is in strategic planning, revenue cycle management, and project management. I am sought to help address issues that range from complex problem solving and strategic alliances to human resources and financial matters.
While working with NEMC, I was selected in 1990 by CIO Magazine as one of the top 100 executives in the United States in my field of specialty.
Academic
I am a graduate of the College of Commerce and Business Administration with a degree in Economics from the University of Illinois.
I have been involved with continuing professional education most of my career. I have taught at corporate education centers in Atlanta, Chicago and Cleveland. I have taught management subjects for Accenture, Deloitte & Touché, Ernst & Young, and IBM. I have developed course material, led multi-instructor curriculum, and taught numerous management-related courses. I have guest lectured on management information systems for Georgetown University and at Tulane University. I have participated in executive education with professors from Duke, Harvard and Ohio State. I have co-authored a book published by Wiley & Sons, Information Technology for Integrated Health Systems, on managing information technology and organizational dynamics within multi-hospital health care environments.
Political
My political involvement began early as a member of Young Republicans at Rantoul Township High School in Rantoul, Illinois, and College Republicans at the University of Illinois. I served as a Congressional intern in Washington, D.C., conducting legislative research for a member of the U.S. House of Representatives who later served as the Secretary of Agriculture under President George H.W. Bush. I attended the 1976 National Republican Convention in Kansas City, conducting advance work for President Gerald Ford as he was seeking re-election.
I have had the opportunity to visit the underground levels of the White House and to personally meet virtually every member of President Ford’s Cabinet. I have met four Presidents and have held a Top Secret security clearance with the Department of Defense. I have served as an appointed Deputy County Clerk assisting in voter registration and Election Day poll monitoring. I have voted in every primary and general election, except one since age eighteen. I have attended the Feldman Campaign School conducted by the Republican National Committee, which is a concentrated course on conducting campaigns for individuals seeking public office. I have assisted directly and indirectly in the campaigns of public officials running for town commission, countywide positions, state legislatures, governors, and members of both chambers of Congress, representing four different states.
I currently serve as the Mayor of Cornelius, North Carolina, a suburb of Charlotte, North Carolina. I will begin serving my third term this coming December, uncontested in my first and second re-election races. As mayor, I also serve as one of nine voting members of the Mecklenburg County Metropolitan Transit Commission. I donate my annual stipend as mayor to various charities.
Community
I am very active at my church in Davidson, North Carolina, where I have served in many capacities, including the long-range planning committee that joining, from fewer than 400 members to a membership of more than 3,800. I have participated on mission trips, including a trip to Cuba. I completed a three-year term on the Staff Parish Committee, which functions as the Human Resources Department for the church, overseeing the evaluations of six ministers and a staff of thirty-six.
I am a long-standing board of directors’ member of the Cornelius-Lake Norman Youth Athletic Association, and completed a tenure of several years as athletic director for our youth baseball program in Cornelius. I personally developed a course and manual for our area youth baseball coaches, and coached in CLNYAA leagues for 10 years. I have served four years on the Finance and Long Range Planning Committees for The Peninsula Country Club in Cornelius, overseeing all financial and budget matters related to the governance and operations of the club.
I am past chairman of the Cornelius Parks, Arts, Recreation, and Culture Advisory Board. I have served for five years as an appointee of the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners as a Mecklenburg Parks & Recreation Department Commissioner. On the county Parks and Recreation Commission, I serve as chairman of the North District Park Advisory Counsel and am a member of the Strategic Planning and Long Range Finance Committee.
I have been continuously involved with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools for the past 16 years, including working directly with the current superintendent of the 136,000-student school system. I was elected to and served on the Davidson International Baccalaureate Middle School Leadership Team for three years.
Family
My wife of 32 years, Dr. Nancy Tarte, is a board-certified pediatrician at Davidson Clinic. My oldest son, Nathan graduated with honors from Appalachian State University in May 2011. He currently attends graduate school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, studying toward a masters degree in Political Science. My other son, Ryan, is a senior at Georgia Tech University and is scheduled to graduate with a degree in mechanical engineering. My daughter, Natalie, is a sophomore studying biology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with plans to attend medical school.
